Tomboy With a Girly Streak

Description

Most Tomboys in fiction tend to dislike "girly" things and being associated with them, but sometimes something sneaks through. It may turn out that she likes the color pink, has a thing for frilly and girly dresses despite her usual boy-ish wear, is easily enamored by cute things, or is a surprisingly good cook and has neat domestic skills.

Reactions to this trait may vary. The tomboy in question might be ashamed of her girly lapse and try to hide it, at least at the start, or she might actually be proud of it and be ready to give a hard smack to anybody who teases her about it. Usually her peers will be surprised, and those who tease will pay.

This character type is much more common in anime and manga than straight-up Tomboys, which may be due to Values Dissonance; in Japan, gender roles are very strictly enforced, and if a girl doesn't measure up to the Japanese ideal of femininity, then she won't be "desirable" enough. Thus, tomboyish characters in Japanese media are usually given enough feminine traits so that they won't be considered too tomboyish.

Examples

Minami Asaoka from Jewelpet (pictured above). She loves sports but has a secret soft spot for girly things.

Numbuh 86 from Codename: Kids Next Door is a bossy, ill-tempered Violent Glaswegian girl and has more Rainbow Monkeys than Numbuh 3.

Helga from Hey Arnold! is an extremely tomboyish and violent Tsundere, but she always wears pink dresses and when she's in private she gets very romantic about her secret crush on Arnold.

Nova from Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! is a tomboyish and feisty Cute Bruiser, but she actually loves cute things, stuffed animals and even has a tea set in her room. In one episode she makes sure none of her teammates is looking as she hugs a bunch of stuffed toys.

Mikoto Misaka from A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun. She wears shorts under her skirt, and when allowed seems to prefer to do away with the skirt altogether. She's a bit violent and seems to enjoy a friendly fight. She's also a complete sucker for cute childish Gekota (an in-universe frog mascot) items, and she likes large stuffed animals.

Triela from Gunslinger Girl practically wears this trope on her sleeve with the combination of a 3 - piece suit and Girlish Pigtails. On a mission, business comes first, but off-duty, she collects teddy bears and serves as Team Mom toward Henrietta.

Persona 4 has Chie Satonaka (who's a straightfoward Tomboy) and Naoto Shirogane (a bifauxnen). Both reveal their feminine sides later on in the game; Chie has girly traits like being scared of bugs, while Naoto has a hidden Shrinking Violet side (and occasionally drops her bifauxnen look in favour of a girlish school uniform, but only if the protagonist romances her and directly asks her to).

Skies of Arcadia: Legends
: Aika was an orphan, who grew up to become an Air Pirate, along with her best friend, Vyse, who regards her as one of the guysnote . But she's not entirely devoid of femininity. She wears jeweled earrings and blue hair ribbons at the ends of her pigtails, for one thing. And while she'll readily face the Valuan Armada, the mere thought of ghosts can paralyze her with fear.
